A new secondary school is set to open in Fishermans Bend from the start of the 2022 school year, bringing with it the capacity for 1,100 students to enrol and be Fishermans Bend’s first senior cohort.

Funded through the 100 New Schools Victorian Government initiative, construction of the state-of-the-art school building is almost complete at 477 Graham Street, Port Melbourne in the Wirraway Precinct.

Built adjacent to JL Murphy Reserve and on the proposed future tram route, together these facilities will provide a focal point for the family-friendly community that will call the area home in the coming decades.

With a focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM), there will be strong synergies with the University of Melbourne’s new engineering and design campus set to open in the mid-2020s. The specialised campus will sit just north of the Westgate Freeway at the Fishermans Bend Innovation Precinct on the former General Motors Holden site.

Designed with environmental sustainability at its core and a strong focus on STEAM, the secondary school will feature the following amenities:

  • Fabrication lab
  • Robotics workshop
  • 200-seat lecture theatre
  • Gymnasium with competition-grade basketball and netball facilities
  • Food technology area with commercial-grade kitchen and canteen
  • Performing arts amenities
  • Outdoor terraces
  • Urban garden with recreational ball sports areas
  • Kitchen garden.

When the first bell rings in 2022, local Fishermans Bend kids will be able to complete all their schooling within safe walking and cycling distance, with the new secondary school complementing the existing South Melbourne Primary School in the Montague Precinct.

School zones, including for both the primary school and new secondary school, have been updated for 2022 and can be viewed at findmyschool.vic.gov.au.

If you’d like to enrol your child and they are currently attending a local government primary school, then you can submit their Year 7 application form to their current school. If they are attending a non-government primary school, you can submit their application form directly to the South-Eastern regional office - "Attention: Youth Pathways and Transitions" at sevr@education.vic.gov.au
