Fishermans Bend: Australia's largest urban renewal

Fishermans Bend is Australia’s largest urban renewal project covering approximately 485 hectares in the heart of Melbourne. Fishermans Bend will consist of five precincts across two municipalities – the City of Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip – and connect Melbourne's CBD to the bay.

It is expected that by 2050, it will be home to approximately 80,000 residents and provide employment for up to 60,000 people.

The planning for Fishermans Bend is being led by the Fishermans Bend Taskforce, comprising of members from Place Victoria, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, and the Cities of Melbourne and Port Phillip.

An independent Ministerial Advisory Committee has also been established to advise the Minister for Planning on Fishermans Bend.

  • Development of the Draft Fishermans Bend Framework Public Engagement Report now available

    Following consultation in November on the principles and ideas emerging from the work underway on the Draft Fishermans Bend Framework, a Public Engagement Report detailing the feedback we received is now available.

    The report brings together the feedback and opinions that were collected to not only inform the draft Framework but to also reflect the community’s broader vision for the future of Fishermans Bend.

    The feedback we received is now being considered as we finalise the draft Framework, which will be released in mid 2017 for further public consultation.

    The Department of Education and Training has announced the new principal for the South Melbourne Primary School, Victoria’s first government vertical school being built in the Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct. The school is currently under construction and will open in January 2018, find out more about the progress of the school by visiting the Victorian School Building Authority.

    Consultation with the community and stakeholders on the principles and ideas to develop a draft Framework was held in November. We received a lot of highly valuable feedback and local knowledge, which is being considered as we finalise the draft Framework. Over the coming weeks, feedback from our consultation sessions will be made available on our website. If you weren’t able to make it to one of the sessions, the materials we had available are here.

    The South Melbourne Ferrars Street Primary School has won an award at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin in the Education – Future Projects category. As the first vertical school in the Victoria, the school will cater for 525 students and include an early learning centre, multi-purpose community rooms and indoor and outdoor multi-purpose sports courts. The school was designed by architecture firm Hayball.

    Interim mandatory built form controls and policy changes have been introduced to encourage employment uses, dwelling diversity and affordable housing in Fishermans Bend while permanent controls are being developed by the Fishermans Bend Taskforce.

    The intention for the guidelines is to improve building and street amenity, which will lead to improvements in building design and streetscape. These guidelines provide stronger guidance on the type and scale of development that is expected in Fishermans Bend and address development context, site layout, building design, microclimate, public space and landscape, transport and access, sustainability and infrastructure.
